Determining the main idea: What is the main point or message the author is trying to get across to the reader? What is important to learn and take away from the story?
Visualizing: With this story, how are the characters described in order for the reader to picture them in their mind?

Six Categories of Characterization
As you read, pay attention to these six ways of how a reader learns about characters within stories!

- What does the character SAY?
- Appearance- what does the character look like?
- How does the author or narrator describe the character?
- Actions- what does the character do?
- Internal thoughts- what does the character think, but not say out loud?
- Situation/environment- where does the character live or what has happened to the character that would influence something about them?
As you read, pay attention to these six ways of how a reader learns about characters within stories!
